Grand Canyon Universityis in the process of changing its underlying zoning from residential to the self-tailored Planned Unit Development. University officials want to hear from the public.
The university proposal, which would cap building heights at 95 feet, has not garnered much opposition, city planner Katherine Coles said.
The request is not tied to a specific project on the campus, university representatives say. Rather, it will guide future “infill” development and redevelopment within the landlocked, urban campus.
Founded in 1949, the private Christian university is on the north side of Camelback Road between 31st and 35th avenues. It has 35 buildings on 101 acres, and serves 4,000 students.
Enrollment is growing, and within the next few decades, the university forecasts 10,000 students with approximately 40 percent living on campus.

The structural support of Grand Canyon University’s new events center is going into place. Ground was broken this summer at the west Phoenix campus. The facility will be the home of the GCU men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 5,000-seat center also is expected to host concerts, conferences, theatrical productions and other large gatherings, said Doug Carroll, manager for GCU’s office of communications and public affairs. The facility is expected to open by October, 2011, and is part of about $70 million in campus-wide improvements.
The building was designed through a partnership between Kansas City-based 360 Architecture and Tempe-based Architekton. 360 Architecture has extensive experience designing sports facilities. Among its projects are 18,500-seat American Airlines Arena in Florida for the NBA’s Miami Heat and 35,000-seat Cisco Field in Fremont, Calif., for Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics.
